Ageing is more than skin deep

It’d safe to say that the skin changes as we age. In short, it gets thinner, drier, more easily damaged, though it does scar less - so it’s not all terrible news! However, from an overall perspective, the changes to skin, sweating and moisture balance are more than skin deep.

Ageing and AGE-ing:

No, that’s not a typo. Much of the process of ageing is caused by AGEs - Advanced Glycation End-Products, which are essentially a form of sugar and protein reaction. This is how it works - think hard toffee, potato chips, barbecued meat. Sugar which is present in all of those foods, reacts through heat with proteins (and fats) to restructure the molecules. That’s why you can’t melt toffee back into sugar - it’s permanently (and deliciously) changed.
